BULLETIN - JULY 23 -- MAJOR SEISMIC ACTIVITY AT YELLOWSTONE VOLCANO -- SEE BOTTOM FOR UPDATE

Grand Teton National Park has closed the Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point tourist attractions because of concerns that a fissuring rock wall could pose a danger.

Grand Teton is near the Yellowstone Super volcano; the second largest volcano on earth.  Concerns are now being raised that the Yellowstone volcanic system may be preparing to emit lava in similar ways that Kilauea volcano has been doing in Hawaii for two months; except Yellowstone is 2,000 times bigger.

National Park Service spokeswoman Denise Germann says growing cracks and fissures were observed in the large buttress above Hidden Falls.

“Yesterday, Exum guides noticed cracks in the rocks,” Teton park spokeswoman Denise Germann said. “They communicated that to rangers this morning, and when they went to investigate they realized it had actually gotten bigger and expanded.”

Germann tells the Jackson Hole News & Guide that the crack is about 100 feet (30 meter) long and runs horizontally along a rock wall that’s at least 100 feet tall.

“The whole area is prone to geological activity,” Germann said, “but this was a very notable difference.”

"The notable changes in the rock over the past 24 hours spurred park rangers to implement a temporary closure and initiate a risk assessment with subject-matter experts."

It is hard to conceptualize the shear size of the Yellowstone volcano system.  The Caldera - the mouth of the volcano - is 213 MILES around!  The underground magma system which feeds that gigantic "mouth" runs countless miles farther in many directions.

In Yellowstone National Park, which is north / northeast of Grand Teton National Park, contains some of the most fascinating geological wonders of the world.  For instance: Geysers that hurl steam and water hundreds of feet into the air on a regular basis.

One of those Geysers is called "Old Faithful" and it erupts with steams and water several times a day.  A much larger nearby Geyser, the largest known Geyser in the world, is called "Steamboat Geyser."  In the past two months, activity at the steamboat geyser has increased very noticeably.  There have been eleven steam and water eruptions from Steamboat in the last two months.  Prior to that, there were only eleven eruptions in the past 28 YEARS.

So clearly, something is now taking place with the Yellowstone volcanic system.  What that is, and what it may lead to, are yet unknown, officially.

Unofficially, a reasonable person can come to a very obvious conclusion about what all this activity is leading to.  And if that conclusion is correct, life in the entire United States could be suddenly and dramatically altered very badly.

Park officials are searching for a Park Service expert to assess the risk of the potentially unstable rock wall.

For now, Exum Mountain Guides have relocated their practice school to another location. Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point — among the park’s busiest attractions — are totally off-limits until further notice. Access to Cascade Canyon is still possible via the horse trail along Jenny Lake.

Jenny Lake Boating is continuing its services ferrying tourists across Jenny Lake, which remains open generally.

“It’s a very busy season for us,” Germann said, “but out of an abundance of caution we believe the best thing to do is have an emergency closure.”

Large sigh. Placing a crack in a rock to justify a diatribe about volcanism is truly yellow press... The Tetons have a large fault running up the edge of the mountains
that is moderately active. This crack is likely related to that, not to any "Yellowstone hot spot".

What an alarmist POS of an article. This has NOTHING to do with Yellowstone. It is very clear the author understands very little of how Yellowstone works.
The process behind this fissure is a mechanical failure of the rock. Due to hydrolic forces. NOT VOLCANIC ACTIVITY!
I am a geologist, and also was just in Yellowstone. There is nothing out of the ordinary there.

I agree with you. I live in south East Idaho about 75 miles from Grand Tetons. (As a crow flies) What they failed to mention is that this area has had more rain this year than the past 20+ years. Our aquifer is full and causing more geysers to erupt. Water flowing through fractures decomposes the bedrock in a process called weathering. Weathering loosens bonds that hold rocks in place.

Hydraulics (from Greek: Υδραυλική) is a technology and applied science using engineering, chemistry, and other sciences involving the mechanical properties and use of liquids. At a very basic level, hydraulics is the liquid counterpart of pneumatics, which concerns gases.

          Image result for hydrologic cycle
          water.usgs.gov
The hydrologic cycle begins with the evaporation of water from the surface of the ocean. As moist air is lifted, it cools and water vapor condenses to form clouds. Moisture is transported around the globe until it returns to the surface as precipitation.

If "God" were going to "tell us something," it stands to reason that "God" could find a lot simpler way of communicating with us. As "God" does not, I conjecture that it's really "Mother Earth" trying to tell us something. Namely, that she is shrinking, as gravity pulls the heavier elements toward the center, and ejects the lighter ones (mostly gasses) outward. In other words, one doesn't need a belief in anthropological unicorns to explain what is happening when a commonsense, science-based explanation will do. Nor is it about Trump, and the veritable wave of mental bulemia he seems to have brought to the surface. I apologize for the vulgarity of fellow non-believers. Some people have to sink hyperbolically to the lowest level right at the very start, thereby negating any serious contemplation of their sentiments.

Fake News. This area closed is for concern over rock slides from cracks in a mountain cleft, not volcanic related, but rather most likely from annual freezing of water trapped. This is how mountains break down naturally. Note that the same source also warns about moose collisions. All normal.

"The National Park Service has determined that the closure is necessary due to the elevated potential for rockfall caused by the recent expansion of cracks and fissures in a large rock buttress above the Hidden Falls viewing area."

It's a thumbnail photo of something else, you moron. The idiot who made the video couldn't even pronounce "Grand Teton" correctly. The story is about a fissure opening in a rock wall, not the ground. He heard the word "fissure," did a google image search, found a random photo of a "fissure" that had nothing to do with the news, and posted it as if it were the actual fissure. And you bought it, thoughtlessly. Please get a god damned education.

The reports are of a fissure in a rock wall, not a fissure in the ground. The only reason anyone thinks it's the ground is because garbage tier websites like this one post random pictures from google image searches that are totally unrelated. They hear the word "fissure" and post the most provocative, random photo they can find. Then ignoramuses who can't think for themselves view those pictures and assume the picture has something to do with the actual story. The picture isn't Yellowstone.

      Kaleb,
      could you share your source?
That is quite a gash in the earth. Any idea how deep it is, and as the Grand Teton officials have stated, how about the other fissures and cracks?
Anybody has any photos of the area, pre- or post event?

Pebblehound....sorry, I can't. I left a decent answer but apparently it was taken down. I was surfing any number of places and ran across that piece of information. It may or may not have a factual basis.

Pebblehoun, sorry, I can't. There are a number of YouTube news/predictive sites associated with the Yellowstone fissures. Not even sure how I got there or exactly which ones had what. Now that you got me thinking in this direction, I don't remember him referencing any source material either or providing any backup at all. Perhaps that is really the final word until something more creditable comes along. Sorry if I cause unnecessary alarms to go off.

Why not check Grand Teton Park website itself?
    There it is:
    https://www.nps.gov/grte/learn/management/temporary-closures-and-compendium-amendments.htm

"...closure is necessary due to the elevated potential for rockfall caused by recent expansion of cracks and fissures in a large rock buttress..."
So according to the Grand Teton Park official announcement, it is not a one crack, but many cracks and fissures.

Rotorua, New Zealand had a crack open about 5 weeks ago. And it too is on the Taupo Super Volcano Caldera...

It appears there could be a "flood basalt" eruption, like those that have happened in Hawaii and Iceland.

What is happening now at Kilauea is a flood basalt eruption, with the amount of lava being emitted, that will keep going for a very long time.

One of the biggest extinction level events was 250 million years ago with the Siberian Traps, with an eruption about 3,800 times that last Yellowstone eruption, equivalent to a VEI 11. The Deccan Traps, 65 million years ago, or so, was equal to a VEI 10.

Before the current Kilauea eruption, that last big flood basalt was Laki, in Iceland, in 1783, which put out enough sulfur dioxide to affect the climate for years, when the waters around NYC froze over hard enough in Winter, you could walk, say, from New Jersey to Manhattan.

Incredible amounts of lava covering such a huge area could happen in Grand Teton, and towns south of the park should prepare for evacuation, as lava could reach them first.

Can you give a source for your information concerning Kilauea

We know it could blow any time, or centuries from now. America is ripe for judgment. We are almost like Sodom and Gomorrah, very immoral. God rained fire and brimstone on them and destroyed them. I hope not. We are in the last days.

We in America ARE fast becoming Sodom & Gomorrah, except for the great numbers of God-fearing people still here. Judgements HAVE COMMENCED. What in the heck do these (unengaged brains) think is going on? The whole world must answer to Yahovah God who made it.....starting with HIS OWN people first, and the rest of humanity last. This volcanic crater is long overdue for an eruption. I wouldn't be so quick to poo-poo the possibility of a huge eruption ANY-time.

Matthew 24 plainly states what will happen if you're not to afraid to read it. If you are, go swim in the lava flow its most likely cooler than hell's fire. Scripture also says not to mick God, fir you will reap what you sow. It's nit too late for you to accept the sacrifice Yeshua made fir you on a historical cross. If you continue to choose to ignore His love, then you and NOT God made your choice if where you will spend eternity.

So, MrBill, you're hostile to Steve's opinion. Why not try for a bit better than name calling....which is no evidence for intelligence.
