An enormously powerful earthquake - described by experts as "VIOLENT"-- has struck just off the coast of Peru.  The magnitude 7.3 quake took place at 4:18 AM Eastern US Time Sunday morning, at a very shallow depth of only 12km, triggering "TSUNAMI WARNINGS" Along the Pacific coast of South America.. 

Heavily populated areas have been hit.  Buildings have collapsed.  People are trapped beneath tons of rubble.  Electricity is out.

The National Tsunami Warning Center has issued a TSUNAMI THREAT Advisory because they type of earthquake, its location offshore, and the data coming in from Tsunami Warning Buoys at sea indicate a very real possibility that a Tsunami wave has been sent hurtling toward the shoreline.

UPDATE

The quake struck 124km (77 miles) south west of Puqio in the south of the country at a depth of 10km (6 miles).

A tsunami warning is now in place near the epicentre of the quake. 

There are up to 10 million people in the area where the quake was felt, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

Peru is located in the Ring of Fire, an area in the Pacific Ocean prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
