For about a year, I have focused from time to time on Disaster Preparedness. I've been ridiculed as a "Doom" junkie and the like, but here's some brutal facts: Had these people been wearing $8 Filter masks and $5 Goggles, they wouldn't be dead.
Volcanic ash grinded into their eyes every time they blinked, blinding them. It entered their lungs, turning into mud with the moisture in the lungs, and suffocated them to death. You can tell that because they survived the heat; there are no burns. That means they literally CHOKED TO DEATH.
These are people JUST LIKE YOU . . . . and they're DEAD for want of a lousy filter mask they could have owned for a few dollars . . .
None of us knows when a disaster is about to strike. Maybe we get some warning, maybe not.
Earthquakes - NO WARNING.
Volcanic eruptions -- maybe some warning, but maybe not.
Tornadoes, Wildfires, Flooding . . . some warning.
Terrorist attacks with chemical or biological weapons -- NO WARNING.
As a major disaster takes place, be it natural or man made - MINUTES count. There's no time to go to a store to get what you need. You have to have some preparations at your fingertips or you could end up like these people in Guatemala.
Once the disaster happens, you still have to have to have resources with you to survive: WATER, Food.
The situation may be such that you can't jump in the car and go to the store because the car is destroyed . . . .
or the roads are gone (Hawaii) . . .
or the stores are all gone. . . .
Or trucks can't even roll to make deliveries of food or fuel . . .
When the roads are impassable, and the electricity isn't coming back for awhile - like weeks in New Jersey after Hurricane Sandy or like MONTHS in Puerto Rico after its hurricane . . . there's nobody coming to help for quite awhile. You have to be able to get-by and survive ON YOUR OWN.
Now, most of us don't live anywhere near a volcano, so you might think having a filter mask and goggles is not necessary. Maybe.
But what if a truck on a local highway overturns while carrying dangerous chemicals? What if a large fire breaks out filling your area with dense smoke? What if Terrorists release chemicals or bio-weapons? All THOSE things can take place pretty much anywhere! Better have a filter mask and goggles for THOSE things!
ABOUT THE MASKS ABOVE: It is important that you have one WITH YOU or within immediate reach at all times. For instance, having masks at home while you're at work is useless if an attack takes place while you're at work. You need to have one in your desk or locker at work. You should also have one in your car in case an attack takes place while you're traveling. I have one for EACH of my family members both at home and in my family car, so if we're all together on an outing, and something takes place, we all have masks in the car. Your finances will dictate how many masks you get, but these are things to really think about as you prep.
While volcanic ash is a potential of limited applicability to most, Chemical and Biological Weapons are not.
If Biological or Chemical Weapons are released, you want to protect your eyes. With chemicals, eye protection is understood, but with BIOLOGICAL, most people do not realize they can walk through infectious particles, some of those particles get on our eyes and when we BLINK, the infection gets pushed into our tear ducts and we're infected!!!!! So having waterproof goggles is essential for protection.
Here are some sources of Emergency Food:
GRAVITY WATER FILTERS
Once your supply of stored water runs out, you're going to need more water, but NONE may be available via Municipal Water Supplies or stores. At that point, you will have to get water from nearby Lakes, Streams or Rivers, and that absolutely requires FILTERING before being consumed. Here are some Gravity-fed water filters you can resort to when your emergency supplies run out:
Masks, Goggles, Food and Water are the absolute BARE ESSENTIALS to have at your fingertips. Even having some such supplies with you at work in your desk, in a brief case, or the trunk of your car parked at the job. If you don't, you - and possibly YOUR kids -- can end up like these kids who thought they were "safe" in their house in Guatemala two days ago:
All for lack of a filter mask and goggles. What a damn shame . . . .
OTHER PREPS TO THINK ABOUT
Generators - To keep the refrigerator cold a couple hours a day, charge your devices and have a couple lights in the house.
Solar Power- Will keep some small devices charged, and one light on in the house
Inverters- VERY LIMITED CAPABILITY
These turn your car battery in 120 volts AC. Wattage is important, a typical refrigerator takes 1100 watts! Bear that in mind as you shop. . .
The are empty cans to store spare fuel for your Generator, car, truck, etc.
These need fuel to operate; usually Kerosene
Kerosene Storage for Heat
These empty containers to store Kerosene fuel are colored blue to distinguish Kerosene from Gasoline.
CB Radio for cars or home
Mobile Antennas (One needed per car)
BASE STATION ANTENNAS - For home or Apt.
GMRS Walkie-Talkies - VERY LIMITED RANGE (Despite Ad Claims; usually less than 1 mile)
GUNS and AMMO (MULTIPLE SUPPLIERS)
FIRST-AID / EMT-TRAUMA KITS
