A municipal garbage truck from Union City, New Jersey went out of control and launched over a bridge overpass, onto Route 495 Westbound below. Rt. 495 is the main highway leading OUT of the Lincoln Tunnel from New York City.
Traffic on the day before a holiday is normally nightmarish in and around NYC, but to have something like this happen has added a new dimension to traffic woes, even for NYC.
Details about how the accident took place, are being pieced together by police. The crash actually began about a block away, on the city streets which run above Route 495. Somehow, the garbage truck slammed into a couple vehicles, took out several utility poles, then careened through a fence, over a wall and flipped upside down as it slid onto Rt. 495 below.
The Lincoln Tunnel out of New York City is CLOSED until further notice. All NYC traffic wishing to leave Manhattan into New Jersey, must use either the Holland Tunnel or George Washington Bridge.
Both those Hudson River crossings are already experiencing 90 minute delays and the delays grow worse each minute as more and more people get out of work and try to leave.
The Port Authority Bus Terminal at 40th Street and 8th Avenue in New York City has SUSPENDED ALL BUS SERVICE until further notice.
