There are about 38,000 uniformed members of NYPD; the largest police department in the nation.
167 cases of COVID-19 across FDNY:
Uniformed Firefighters Association President Gerard Fitzgerald talked Friday about the ongoing effect of the coronavirus crisis on the city's firefighters.
Fitzgerald said his goal is to keep the firefighters safe and his main concern is having fully staffed engines and trucks as the virus spreads across the city.
He said that while he's confident in the firefighters' training to handle emergency situations during a pandemic, the department is still in need of more equipment, specifically the N95 masks.
Fitzgerald said that as of Thursday night there were 167 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the FDNY.
New York City has quickly become the epicenter of the national pandemic, with 21,873 cases making up the majority of the state's 37,258 total COVID-19 cases, as of Thursday.
