The outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19) is accelerating in the United States.
The United States reports more than 10,000 new COVID19 cases in the last 24 hours for the first time. New confirmed cases are 10,671 bringing the total to 65,527 with 148 new deaths in the past twenty four hours, bringing the total to 928 Dead.
The infection rate in the US is now worse than Italy:
Total deaths / Total recovered / Closed cases CFR
928 / 393 / 70.2% Death rate
The total includes cases from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, other US territories, as well as all repatriated cases.
- Experts say the spike is yet to come and the crisis will last for months, at least.
- Across the US 175 million people living in 17 states have been urged to stay home to avoid catching or spreading the new, deadly disease.
- New York is by far the worst affected state in the country, with 30,000 cases.
There are at least 30,811 confirmed cases of coronavirus across the state of New York, Gov. Cuomo said at a news conference..
At least 17,858 of those cases are in New York City.
According to the figures Governor Cuomo gave out, 12,137 people were tested in the past day in New York State and 5,146 were positive. That's 42%.
Cuomo said that 12% of those individuals who have tested positive are hospitalized, and 3% of positive cases are in ICU.
At least 285 people across the state who had tested positive for coronavirus have died, Cuomo added.
He added that 28% of all coronavirus testing across the country has been done by New York state — more than any other state.
There are 236 members of the New York Police Department who have tested positive for coronavirus, according to numbers provided by the department.
Of those, 197 are officers and 39 are civilians, the department said.
Additionally, 3,200 police officers are out sick, which is just about 9% of the entire NYPD.
Also 50 firemen tested positive.
5 more U.S. Navy sailors aboard aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt test positive for Covid-19 in the Western Pacific, bringing total to 8 on that vessel in past two days.
The warship has a crew of 5,000.
Hospitals Debating "universal DNR"
Hospitals on the front lines of the pandemic are engaged in a heated private debate over a calculation few have encountered in their lifetimes — how to weigh the “save at all costs” approach to resuscitating a dying patient against the real danger of exposing doctors and nurses to the virus’s contagion.
The conversations are driven by the realization that the risk to staff amid dwindling stores of protective equipment — such as masks, gowns and gloves — may be too great to justify the conventional response when a patient “codes,” and their heart or breathing stops.
Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago has been discussing a universal do-not-resuscitate policy for infected patients, regardless of the wishes of the patient or their family members — a wrenching decision to prioritize the lives of the many over the one.
The expected 'Italy levels' of strain and collapse to the Healthcare system has now begun in the United States. On Wednesday, New York, Hawaii, and North Carolina requested FEMA provide emergency mortuary assistance as deaths mount across the states.
A spokesperson for the Federal Emergency Management Agency confirmed the request in a statement on Wednesday," and it's now under review but not yet approved."
If the emergency request for federal morgue assistance to these states are approved, HHS Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Teams, or DMORT, will deploy in order to “work to quickly and accurately identify victims and support local mortuary services,” according to a government website, as well to “establishing temporary morgue facilities” and help in “assisting in the determination of cause and manner of death”.
Should these initial states receive the FEMA help, more states are likely to follow suit as cases across the US grow.
