Despite over a week of warnings from Russia that Ukrainian forces were deliberately targeting the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant and could cause a disaster, Ukraine continued firing. Today, artillery shells hit the cooling system for a reactor, and hit containers with nuclear waste.

This report is published at 5:08 PM eastern US time. The attack took place about 3 hours ago.

It is not yet known (to me) if there is any reactor trouble or radiation leak from either the reactor cooling system or the nuclear waste storage containers.

This is a developing story. . .

The plant provided 20% of all Ukraines electricity.
So a settlement based on todays position would see the New Ukraine paying Russia for electricity from this plant.
Shelling the plant is a war crime - according to the UN - so Zelensky cannot boast about it.

Russia called a meeting earlier - I wonder what was discussed ? It should be fairly easy to gather evidence of whose artillery caused this latest damage. Then Russia can take it to another meeting of the SC, lay it in our ambassador's face, and let the U.S. veto any resolution condemning this war crime, thereby showing their true colors to the other members.

There is always something to be gained by a transfer of the moral high ground. I realize all the SC members want to suck up to their particular superpower sugar daddy, but the U.S. is losing its grip on some of its supplicants for a variety of reasons, and this might accelerate the process.

Exactly. In addition, freighters critical to manufacturing in the Midwest haul 58.7 million tons per year into the Jeffersonville & Burns Harbor IN alone. An attack on Chicago most likely would damage nearby harbors. Other harbors in close proximity receive tons of manufacturing supplies as well.
