I do not know if our military still does this, but back in the mid 70's our Marine Battalion Landing Team would have regular stop overs in Taiwan. Specifically in Kaohsiung and Taipei. We even had parties with their military where they would supply copious amounts of beer. Have many memories of sight seeing their cities and meeting their people.

I would be surprised, if we stopped doing these visits between when I was in the service and now. I wonder if more is being made of our continual relationships and activities with them than is the case.

China "owns" the only deep water port on the west coast. The ports they need, the people not so much. It takes too much man power to take and hold a large city. Easier to "remove" them or siege them.
Hal did a story not long ago about A-10s landing on the roadways. A-10s are a close ground fire support aircraft. I always wondered if they were practicing for "us" or them.

Look at Germany's invasion of Poland in 1939. They staged a false attack on a radio station as thier reasoning to move in.
