UPDATE 7:51 AM EST --
The Ontario government says there has been some sort of “incident” at Pickering Nuclear Generating Station, prompting them to send a mass mobile alert to people as far away as Toronto.
The province said an incident was reported at the station, off of Montgomery Park Road in Pickering, sometime on Sunday and emergency crews are at the power plant.
“There has been NO abnormal release of radioactivity from the station,” the alert read. “People near the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station DO NOT need to take any protective actions at this time.”
The power plant is run by Ontario Power Generation and has been in service since 1971. It is slated to be decommissioned in 2024.
The text of the alert said it applied to those within 10 kilometres of the station but cell phone users as far away as 33 kilometres from the plant received the alert.
A spokesperson for OPG told CP24 he had no additional information to provide.
Durham Regional Police also said they had no information to provide.
Pickering Nuclear Generating Station is a Canadian nuclear power station located on the north shore of Lake Ontario in Pickering, Ontario. It is one of the oldest nuclear power stations in the world and Canada's third-largest, producing about 15% of Ontario's power and employing 3,000 workers.
The map below shows the area:
Co-located at the Pickering station is a single 1.8 MWe wind turbine named the OPG 7 commemorative turbine. Sunday January 12 incident warning sent out by Ontario government.
Nothing? Then Why the ALERT?
People in Canada are barraging us with emails asking basically "Why would the government issue such an alert when they know people will panic?? Toronto has millions of people.... something doesn't add up here... it must be a lot worse than they are letting on otherwise they would never issue an alert for such an event."
We cannot answer such questions right now, but we are endeavoring to obtain the facts.
