The problem with studying the impending confrontation between West and East is that Americans get pulled into a thought exercise of trying to identify who the "underdog" is.
Once we have identified who we think the underdog, we tend to instinctively gravitate to support that side. This dynamic runs through our politics, through our support of sports teams, through our culture, through everything. We want the weaker guy or side to win. Perhaps this psyche comes from the American revolution where the tiny gnat of the USA defeated the great lion of the British Empire. We have never abandoned that model of seeing the world - always pulling for the "little guy" or the underdog. This dynamic also
drives politics and events in the news. The debate over the Floyd shooting is really a debate about who was the underdog. Leftists see Floyd as the underdog. Conservatives
tend to see Chauvin as the underdog. Putin knows this about the American psyche. The Russians and the Chinese have studied America intensely for decades and they understand our psychology better than we do. However we do not understand them. The Russians despise weakness and worship strength. Where our politics is driven always by championing the downtrodden and the media is always the one who sets the narrative and decides who the downtrodden is, Russia doesn't have this cultural crutch. They are much more focused on survival as a people and I would say the same goes for China. Both cultures have never lost sight of the necessity of surviving. In contrast, having had many decades of relative prosperity we are not nearly as focused on survival, being distracted by so many distractions and entertained by so many entertainments be it partisan politics, sports, or music and tv.
Another thing we Americans don't understand is how advanced the Russian military has become (see linked article below). We are still in large part thinking of the Russia of 1991 and thinking in the past. Russia has carefully presented this image for our consumption of being the weaker underdog because they know it keeps us from seeing them as a threat or potential victor in a conflict. However, the recent speech by Putin makes many references to weapons systems that the west has no counter for.
If we understand this, we need to quit thinking the Russians are the underdog. Admittedly the Biden administration at the urging of the deep state is pushing for a confrontation
with Russia. And admittedly this is something no intelligent person wants. However maybe just maybe it's because they (deep state) know that each year that goes by we get
weaker while Russia and China get stronger and the window that we could even possibly prevail in such a contest has almost closed. We know for a fact China wishes to colonize
North America and exterminate its inhabitants. Perhaps Putin has decided that is the only way that China doesn't eventually confront Russia is to help them take North America.
In effect. by keeping the Chinese bear fed with American meat he keeps the Russian bear from getting attacked.
Also perhaps Putin feels and believes as the deep state obviously does, that a confrontation with the U.S. and the west is inevitable and has been planning his entire life and preparing
Russia for just such a confrontation. Perhaps we need to stop looking at these great power competitions with the intent of attempting to identify who the underdog is so that we can "root for this that underdog". Perhaps we should instead view these competitions as confrontations between great Kodiak bears in the wilderness fighting over "turf". We are
merely ants trying to not get trodden underfoot. Neither bear is really the underdog. Both - actually in this case all three bears: China, Russia and the U.S. are predators seeking to enlarge their turf. To see things that way, we need to move beyond the American propensity of picking an underdog to have an objective analysis. Before we can be objective, it might help to acquaint ourselves with the preparations that Russia has made for WW3. As Hal has pointed out, the U.S. has made no such preparations. Perhaps it was in arrogance, no preparations were made. Perhaps it was in stupidity no preparations have been made, or perhaps it was a bit of both.
