Russia strikes Reservoir Dam; Sends water Surging downstream

The Russian army launched a missile attack on Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. There were two attacks, the local administration did not announce in which parts of the city the defeats took place.

Military observers tweeted that Tu-95MS strategic (and nuclear) bombers attacked dams and reservoirs in Ukraine with Kh-101 missiles, which have a range of 5,500 km and carry 500 kg of explosive warheads. The deputy head of the presidential administration in Kyiv, Kiril Tymoshenko, announced that a total of 8 rockets were fired at Kryvyi Rih.

Some missiles hit below the waterline of the dam across the Ingulets river.  The impact severely damaged the dam and the water level in the Ingulets river is now surging - severely as seen in the video below:

Electricity and fresh water is now cut-off in Kryvyi Rih.

This is now the second large demonstration of what Russia is capable of doing to Ukrainian infrastructure; the first being missile strikes against electrical stations a few days ago.

Unlike the electric grid, which was re-routed, there's no way to make a quick fix to this dam.

Reminds me of the movie "The Dam Busters". The allies back in WWII blew up numerous hydroelectric dams in Germany. I am not surprised that this has started.

"In a warning to NATO, Russia fired the Kh-47M2 Kinzhal ‘Dagger’ hypersonic missile in combat for the first time to engage targets in Western Ukraine, neutralizing a large underground warehouse in the village of Delyatyn in Ukraine’s Ivano-Frankivsk region near the country’s border with NATO’s Poland — over which it has been receiving the bulk of military supplies, and reportedly destroyed huge quantities of munitions. This is the first and only known use of the Kinzhal hypersonic missile. — there’s no known confirmed footage of the missile at the moment. — However, the use of the missile has been officially confirmed." -- ASB Military

if nukes are not used, but Russia China USA etc use all their conventional armies and weapons - just how much of the world will survive ?

And maybe the next generation will think - if only someone had used a nuke or two to stop worlwide destruction it would have been much better.

Did not happen with the two dropped - or the other nuclear accoidents, of which there have been several.
The effects are local - albeit long lasting.
+1 # No, they are notThe Infant Phenomenon 2022-09-14 20:32
Nuke power plant disasters are long-lasting, but not the effects of nuke bombs. Well, unless one falls on you, of course. Anyway, the fallout from bombs is not at all the same as the damage wrought by nuke power plants. If it were, Nagasaki would still be uninhabitable. You can look this stuff up, you know.
+24 # Just a demonstration???dewill 2022-09-14 16:14
Have to disagree with Hal about this being just a “demonstration” of the Russian Army’s capability to destroy infrastructure. This was IMHO a military attack with an objective. Southeast of this dam Ukraine is planning a counter offensive and have moved large amounts of armor and personnel into the area. Reports I have read indicate that the river has risen 2-1/2 meters so far and all of Ukraine’s pontoon bridges have been washed down stream. There is now a large contingent of Ukraine’s armor and personnel trapped between a raging river to their West and the Russian Army to their East. Might be good hunting for the Russian Army tonight.
+4 # Ha ha!Gregg W 2022-09-14 19:01
Well. If that’s the case, that was a good hit.
+2 # RE: Just a demonstration???MSNews 2022-09-14 18:57
If what you say is true (and is very logical), it definately was a military attack, not on civilian infastructure but as a military target, just like the electicity grid.
Russia needs another round of grid attacks to semi-permanently destroy the grid and communications centers.

May also involve military satelite destruction, and starlink sats.

Don't forget about airports too, runways are not much for landing if pot holes exist.

Looking at that video and concrete damage, those missiles have a bunch of explosive impact. Do any of you military guys know what kind of explosives the missiles have?

Oh boy. . . Just terrible. This sort of stuff will take many, many years and tons of money to get fixed, if ever.
+5 # Which is whyJessiebeaner 2022-09-14 21:15
Putin has refrained, until now, from resorting to this sort of destruction.
Unlike the US military that creates wanton destruction, often without real purpose, everywhere it wars, Putin has shown phenomenal restraint in damaging things that civilians rely upon.
# Putin's choicestandingwave 2022-09-15 08:58
It might not be so much philanthropy behind Putin's restraint as it is his belief the conflicted territory will again be part of Russia and Russia will have to rebuild the infrastructure destroyed during the war. He must choose his targets carefully.

That's going to do a lot of agricultural damage downstream as that river will overtake all the water wheels, generators, pumps that are used to water crops.
