SpaceX Tells U.S. Gov't it can no longer fund StarLink in Ukraine

SpaceX corporation has informed the United States government that the company can no longer fund the StarLink services provided to Ukraine. Without Starlink, the Ukrainian army will have almost no way to reliably communicate with what's left of its battlefield troops, and would almost immediately collapse.

This comes days after Ukrainian Ambassador Melnyk Andrij told Musk to “fuck off.”

To many observers, this is a two-fold matter:

1) Ukraine bashed the heck out of StarLink founder Elon Musk for daring to suggest a negotiated peace with Russia; so it is likely Musk has his nose out of joint over the insults, AND;

2) It likely costs almost nothing to fund the operation of Ukraine's Starlink services since all the satellites were already up and operating, so this is seen by many as a naked money grab; to get the US gov't to fork over more cash under the guise of "aid to Ukraine."

Either way, it seems to many that Musk wins. He either gets to shut off the people who took his help for granted, then bashed him publicly for suggesting peace, OR, he gets a ton of cash from the US government to continue providing service to Ukraine.

No, not really. These are low-earth-orbit satellites (~340mi up). They are not geosynchronous (22k mi up). They cover everything from 60Nlat to 60Slat.

Ukraine is in that range.....and they allow service or not.

They DO NOT have to serve Ukraine. And they don't have to do anything to STOP serving Ukraine other than to choose to ignore their transmissions ..... or brick their antenna/terminal boxes.

Choosing to provide service to Ukraine was a business (and perhaps humanitarian) decision.

Even if Ukraine has the satellite dishes/terminals....Starlink DOES NOT have to provide service.

This is Musk's way of saying, hey my satellites are of no use to Ukraine because the Russians have a better jamming system than I do.

The Ukrainian Army is already blind on the battlefield and I can tell you, you can not operate any sized element on a battlefield without communication. This effectively means that the artillery and foot soldiers are left on the battlefield with out knowledge of support, resupply or causality/medical status. They are completely blind.

Everything Musk has invented is refurbished old inventions. Electric cars were first invented in the 1800's. High speed trains are just trains. Trains were again invented in the 1800's. The rocket shoips and satellites he puts into orbit are based on 1960's inventions. Musk is very smart at reinventing products that are very old and presenting them as new innovations.
