50 Years Ago Tonight, at 7:10 PM Eastern US Time: The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

Fifty Years ago tonight, at 7:10 PM eastern US time, in a disaster that struck the heart of America, the Bulk Cargo Merchant Vessel  "SS Edmund Fitzgerald" was lost during a ferocious storm on Lake Superior.

29 Men died - believed to be in five seconds - as the ship crested a wave, went down the back of the crest, and (it is believed) the bow of the ship struck the bottom of Lake Superior, causing the ship to break in half, and remain on the lake bottom as the water above simply covered it up in one fell swoop.

I will be speaking about this tonight on my radio show.
