I have just been told an extremely bizarre rumor claiming that tomorrow, when the NATO Summit begins in Vilnius, Lithuania, the organization will admit "Western Ukraine" as a full member immediately. The Bizarre rumor also claims NATO troops will enter Kiev immediately after membership is granted, so as to prevent Russian invasion from (guessing) Belarus, and NATO will then impose a "no Fly" Zone over western Ukraine.
I don't pretend to know how Treaty language can be interpreted, but it seems to me this is total hogwash. It seems to me there is no "country" named "Western Ukraine" and so such a non-existent nation entity cannot simply be admitted to NATO.
Moreover, the notion that NATO troops would enter Kiev to prevent a Russian invasion from, let's say, Belarus, is absurd. As soon as those troops entered Ukraine on their way to Kiev, they would be legitimate targets for the Russian Army.
Lastly, the notion that NATO can impose a "No Fly" zone over Western Ukraine, I suspect would be met by the full force of the Russian Air Force, which immediately triggers World War 3.
This entire rumor seems not only outlandish and unbelievable to me, it smacks as propaganda to incite trouble.
I report this "rumor" because it is rapidly becoming widespread in a manner that seems quite unusual to me.
In fact, because it is spreading so very fast, I've begun to wonder if the folks at NATO might just be crazy enough to try a stunt like this?
Again, all of this is RUMOR. We will all have to wait for the NATO Summit to begin tomorrow, to find out.
As such, passing this along FYI.
