Ecuador Troops RAID Mexican Embassy; Arrest Jorge Glas; Mexico May Declare War

Armed Soldiers of the Ecuadorian Army RAIDED the Mexican Embassy in Quito to arrest the former vice president of Ecuador Jorge Glas

According to Article 22 of the Vienna Convention, diplomatic premises cannot be violated.

Today, the Ecuadorian state forcibly entered the Mexican embassy in Ecuador and removed Jorge Glas.

The Mexican president has quickly moved to break off diplomatic ties with Ecuador after police broke into the Mexican Embassy to arrest a former Ecuadorian vice president who had sought political asylum there after being indicted on corruption charges.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO)  made the announcement Friday evening after Ecuadorian police forced their way into the embassy in the capital, Quito, to arrest Jorge Glas who has been residing there since December. Glas, arguably the most wanted man in Ecuador, has been convicted on bribery and corruption charges and Ecuadorian authorities are still investigating more allegations against him.

Police broke through the external doors of the Mexican diplomatic headquarters in the Ecuadorian capital and entered the main patio to get Glas.

The Mexican government promises to retaliate and, if possible, formally declare a request for an bureaucratic warfare against the Ecuadorian government.

— URGENT: The director of the Latin America Watch NGO asserts that the Mexican government might declare war on Ecuador for invading the embassy, and if feasible, it will be carried out without impediments.

"If López Obrador goes crazy, tomorrow he could declare war on Ecuador. The assault on the Mexican Embassy may be considered an attack on Mexican territory, despite sheltering a high-level criminal. This is going to get very ugly. Pay attention to what happens."
