At the request of the "state" of Israel, the UN Security Council will hold an Emergency Meeting here in New York City today, Sunday April 14, 2024.
No one is quite sure as to why Israel has asked for this Emergency Meeting. Israel bombed the Iran Embassy Compound in Damascus, Syria, on April 1 and Iran just fired missiles and drones in response, last night.
The response was permitted under the UN Charter, Article 51.
What Israel hopes to achieve with this "Emergency" meeting is not known, especially since, according to a public statement by Iran, the matter "is now closed."
(HT REMARK: Perhaps Israel wishes to whine and cry, claiming they're so persecuted . . . . ?)
UPDATE: Iran has now asked for permission to speak at this Security Council meeting.
UPDATE 3:30 PM EDT --
Relevant portion of Iranian statement at Security Council:
"If Israel wants to continue its evil operations, it will receive a response dozens of times stronger. We will not hesitate to defend ourselves and reveal a small part of our deterrent power.
We targeted Israeli military sites in the attack and there are no other operations on our agenda.
We took minimal punitive measures and avoided targeting economic facilities and infrastructure."
