Ocean Data Buoy Reporting 2000 Meter Drop in Ocean Depth off Chile

Ocean Data Buoy Reporting 2000 Meter Drop in Ocean Depth off Chile

A Tsunami Warning Buoy off the coast of Chile, South America, is reporting a two thousand meter decrease in ocean depth, which it reports took place over a period of about 5 minutes!

Data Buoy #34420, operated by the United States National Data Buoy Center, reports the following water column height as of 7:17 AM eastern US time on Friday, April 12, 2024:

Data-Buoy Alerting off Chile

Water column height (or as Laymen call it, "ocean Depth") is determined by data recorded in pounds per square inch absolute (PSIA), but are displayed in meters of water after applying a constant 670.0 mm of water/PSIA conversion factor.

So what is causing this ocean data buoy to "Alert" that ocean depth has decreased by two thousand meters?  A malfunction?

I have a call in to the National Data Buoy Center for further information.  This story will be updated if/when they respond.
