New Secretary of State Marco Rubio said something amazing and very positive today, during a television interview. He talked about the "Unipolar" world (where the U.S. runs everything) NOT being the usual way the world works.
He plainly stated that it sort of became Unipolar, with the US in the top spot, after the Cold War. He ALSO said that it is returning back to multi-polar, with other nations like China and Russia resuming their global roles.
The mere public acknowledgement of this is an utterly stunning development, in what many people see as a very positive way.
He said the most basic starting point for United States Foreign Policy SHOULD BE strategy. We need to ask, before we do anything, "What is the strategic objective?" He added that before we engage in any foreign policy, we have to already know "What is the purpose, the mission?"
Continuing, he went on to say "The mission of American Foreign Policy . . . and I think this has been LOST . . . The mission of American Foreign Policy is to further the national Interests of the United States of America."
He went on to observe "That's the way the world has always worked. The way the world has always worked is that the Chinese will always do what's in the best interests of China. The Russians will always do what's in the best interests of Russia. The Chileans will always do what's in the best interests of Chile,, and the United States needs to do what's in the best interests of the United States."
Rubio then covered the most basic reality when he said "When our interests align, that's where we have partnerships and alliances. Where our differences are NOT aligned, that is where the job of Diplomacy is to PREVENT CONFLICT; while still furthering our national interests, and understanding they are gonna further theirs."
Then, he dropped a political bombshell when he said "I think that's been LOST."
He went on to say "I think that was lost at the end of the cold war because we were the only power in the world. We assumed this responsibility of sort of becoming the Global Government in many cases; trying to solve EVERY problem. And there are terrible things happening in the world. And then there are things that are terrible and impacting our national interest directly. We need to prioritize those again.
He went on to say "So it's NOT NORMAL for the world to have a unipolar power; that was an anomaly. It was a product of the end of the Cold War. But eventually you were gonna reach back to a point where you had a multi-polar world, multi great powers you had in different parts of the planet. We face that now with China, and to some extent, with Russia.
Then you have rogue states like Iran and North Korea you have to deal with. So now more than ever, we need to remember that foreign policy should be about furthering the national interests of the United States, and doing so TO THE EXTENT POSSIBLE AVOIDING WAR AND ARMED CONFLICT, WHICH WE HAVE SEEN TWO TIMES IN THE LAST CENTURY."
It was an utterly amazing top-down re-assessment of how the United States has been behaving on the world stage, and what we need to GET BACK TO.
