Naval Air Station Sigonella in Sicily went into lockdown this morning due to an “ongoing situation” at an entry gate.
Details? Classified.
Confusion? Plenty.
All traffic in and out of NAS 2, the base’s main aviation hub, was shut down.
Personnel were told to shelter in place and avoid a road leading to military housing. Security forces redirected traffic.
The base, run by both the U.S. Navy and Italian Air Force, is a crucial NATO hub for surveillance, refueling, and cargo transport across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
In other words, not exactly a place you want on lockdown.
Officials are telling personnel to stay tuned for updates.
So far, no word on when things will return to normal.
