New York Harbor Merchant Vessel Loses Power; Grabbed by Tugboats Before Reaching Verrazano Narrows Bridge

The container ship APL QINGDAO reportedly lost power while transiting New York harbor. They had 3 escort tugs but 3 more were needed to bring her under control.

A New York City tugboat captain reported that they regained power and were brought to anchor near the Verrazano bridge”

The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge has a central span of 4,260 feet (1.30 km; 0.81 mi). It was the longest suspension bridge in the world until it was surpassed by the Humber Bridge in the United Kingdom in 1981.

To give you an idea of just how big the bridge is, the towers are so far apart that, although they're both perfectly plumb (straight up and down), the towers are 1 degree out of alignment because of the curvature of the earth.

Interestingly, the vessel is now at anchor by the bridge.

It was supposed to arrive in Norfolk April 8.  Norfolk being the largest east coast navy base.
